SELECT A CHARACTER
Stella Wincott
Stella Wincott is Lily's mother, and rules over her only daughter like
a tyrant. Harsh, sharp-tongued, and critical, Stella has always found
Lily to be sadly lacking in almost every way.
Stella's relationship with Aaron is fairly simple, if not particularly
good -- Aaron avoids the old woman like a plague vector. Her dealings with
Sharon are more complex. Sharon, an avowed atheist, has always butted heads
with the ruthlessly devout Stella. Their history is one long series of
uneasy truces marked by knock-down, drag-out arguments.
Gail is the only one in the Curmen family towards whom Stella ever shows
any respect. Though some of the particulars of their beliefs are quite
different, Gail is a sufficiently observant Christian to make Stella
happy. Gail is also naturally respectful in all the places where her
sister tends to be rude, and this also has served to endear Stella to
her. For her part, Gail is not happy with the way that Stella treats
her mother and her sister, but tries to make peace rather than taking
sides in the conflicts.
Of all the family, Stella was the first to have a true insight as to
why Sharon was miraculously healed by a bolt of lightning. In a dangerous
evening on Independence Day, she revealed to the girls that her husband,
James Wincott, was not their real grandfather. Instead, she told them,
she met a man during Mardis Gras in New Orleans when she was young who
fathered Lily. That man, she is certain, was the devil in disguise. She
has geared her life towards preventing any satanic influence from
affecting her daughter or grandchildren -- and believes that, in Sharon's
case, she has failed.
Though her attempt to destroy Sharon on Independence Day failed, Stella
is a very stubborn and determined woman. Even with Gail now decisively
set against her, it seems likely that she will not give up in her crusade
against what she believes is the devil's seed so easily.
Stella has recently been approached by Ray Warwick of the mysterious
and powerful organization, Perivigilum. Even after he revealed his seemingly
angelic nature to her, Stella remains dubious about Vigil's motives,
methods, and claims of divine providince.
