Life does not give me all that much time to play video games, so I have to be kind of picky about the ones I allow to soak up a few free hours during the week. This summer has been a very dry season for games, and I confess that two of the autumn releases I was most looking forward to were immense disappointments. Both SSX On Tour and Ultimate Spider-Man came with excellent pedigree -- I have loved the previous games in the series for each. Both felt like a huge step back. Both will be traded in instead of becoming a part of my cherished library. It's a bummer. Ah, but salvation has come. And it is called Shadow of the Colossus. This game is utterly, utterly marvelous. It brings tremendous novelty and artistry to the experience of playing a game, and has swept me up in its world. Sure, it's a product of the commercial industry, and sure, video games are not accepted as "high art" by whatever snoots appoint themselves as custodians of such things, but you cannot play this game and be unmoved by its grandeur. It was made with love, folks -- skill and love. These are the two ingredients of art, as far as I'm concerned. And I have been entranced.
